LEARN URBAN DANCE
Urban dance includes dance styles that are covered quite extensively throughout the world. The first thing you need to decide is which types of urban dance styles you are interested in.
Whether you're interested in learning breaking, hip hop dance routines, popping, locking or any of the other styles. There aren't many dance classes that are called 'urban dance' so it's best to know what specifically you want and go out and find a class centred on that.
There are some classes that are called 'urban dance' or 'urban' - these classes tend to be based upon hip hop dance routines and choreography so if this is what you're looking for they will be ideal for you.
On the other hand there are plenty of other dance classes which go by other names but may well still be urban dance. For example a class called 'funk styles' or 'hip hop fusion' or 'street dance' are all probably going to be based around urban dance styles.
Just because they are called these other names does not mean that they are any less urban dance styles. In fact if you are looking for a particular style of dance it is best to go and find a class or teacher that specializes in that style as they'll probably know a lot more about it than the average teacher.
Remember because 'urban dance' is somewhat an umbrella term that includes lots of dance styles, what one teacher calls 'urban' may look completely different from what a different teacher calls urban. Remember there are lots of different genres in this category and they can all be types of urban dancing!
A teacher's routines may even include dance moves from these different individual styles in what is often called a fusion style.
It is to your advantage in whatever style of dance you are learning to start with a beginners class. It is important to learn the style properly from the basics and not to skip ahead, in some styles it may even be dangerous to take on too much too soon.
Only progress to harder material when you are more confident with the moves that you have learnt at beginners level to avoid any unwanted injuries or problems.
Many styles of urban dance are taught in dance studios around the world, it is just a matter of finding the right one for you that you can get to. Other styles such as capoeira or parkour may be taught outdoors, in martial arts clubs or in other specialist facilities.
As you get better and go onto harder stuff you may begin to feel that you're getting the feel for it and actually doing urban dance as opposed to trying to do it. Each style has a unique feel to it and a way of doing things and it's only really once you can understand and do these things that you are doing the style properly.
You may need to try different teachers before you find one that teaches in the style that you like. Or you may find several teachers that you like and learn from them all!
When learning many people also find it helpful to watch a lot of dancing as they're learning. By watching urban dance videos you can see how other good dancers do their moves and it can help you understand them better as well.
It goes without saying that it's very important to watch your dance teacher as well to see how they are doing the move, and how you can do it like them as well. They are there to help you after all!
You can also learn urban dance from videos as well. There are moves from each style that you can find on sites such as YouTube that can help you get started in whatever dance style you choose.
If you want to take it further then you can always join a dance class at some point.
